{"id":652,"date":"2012-01-27T12:25:23","date_gmt":"2012-01-27T20:25:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oursilverribbon.org\/blog\/?p=652"},"modified":"2012-01-27T12:25:23","modified_gmt":"2012-01-27T20:25:23","slug":"time-to-speak-out","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oursilverribbon.org\/?p=652","title":{"rendered":"Time to Speak Out!"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/pol.moveon.org\/trustwomenmarch?rc=TWSR\"><strong>Why I&#8217;m Marching Today!<\/strong><\/a><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zCmCcACrm6M\" target=\"_blank\">Hyde amendment <\/a>banned spending federal funds on abortion and I didn&#8217;t speak out because I didn&#8217;t use MediCaid.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThey restricted access to abortion for residents of D.C., but I didn&#8217;t speak out because I didn&#8217;t live in D.C.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThe House voted <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/g75o0z\">to take away Title X funding<\/a>\u00a0for birth control and Pap smears from poor women, <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/gd4QEn\">to redefine rape<\/a>\u00a0to exclude a woman who was drunk, drugged or underage, and authorized hospitals <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rhrealitycheck.org\/article\/2011\/10\/17\/the-let-women-die-bill-of-2011-hr-358-forces-women-to-play-russian-roullette-in-their-hospital-emergency-roo0\">to let a women die<\/a>\u00a0rather than perform an abortion, and I didn&#8217;t speak out because it couldn&#8217;t happen to me.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\nThey shot Dr. Tiller, and tried in several states (SD, NE, IA) <a href=\"http:\/\/motherjones.com\/politics\/2011\/02\/south-dakota-hb-1171-legalize-killing-abortion-providers\">to legalize killing doctors<\/a>\u00a0as justifiable homicide and I didn&#8217;t speak out because I wasn&#8217;t a doctor. And\u00a0I was scared.<br \/>\n\u00a0<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.opencongress.org\/bill\/112-h3\/show\">They tried to strip abortion coverage out of all insurance<\/a>\u00a0plans during health care reform, and I didn&#8217;t speak up because I thought I might lose &#8220;more important things.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They tried to take away collective bargaining, Medicare, Social Security, teaching science in schools, our ability to save the climate, financial regulation, and reproductive rights. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pol.moveon.org\/trustwomenmarch?rc=TWSR\"><strong>And I knew it was time to speak out!<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <em>Sophia Yen and Ellen Shaffer, based on Martin Niemoller<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong>Compared with men, women are more likely to be raising children on our own, to be segregated into lower wage jobs and to earn less money for the same work, and to lack health insurance.<\/strong> While our life expectancy has increased since the 1960s, our lives are restricted by our race, ethnicity and class, as well as by gender, sexual orientation, and age. The global economic downturn has fallen most heavily on women&#8217;s jobs and incomes, and in the U.S. the problem is compounded by the increasingly uneven distribution of wealth.
