{"id":630,"date":"2012-01-24T04:50:58","date_gmt":"2012-01-24T12:50:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oursilverribbon.org\/blog\/?p=630"},"modified":"2012-01-24T04:50:58","modified_gmt":"2012-01-24T12:50:58","slug":"background-on-abortion-for-trust-women-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/oursilverribbon.org\/?p=630","title":{"rendered":"Background on Abortion for Trust Women Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There will always be women who need access to abortions.<br \/>\nAbortion is basic health care for women.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 in 3 American women will have had an abortion by age 45.<\/li>\n<li>About 50% of pregnancies in theU.S. are unintended.<\/li>\n<li>4 in 10 unintended pregnancies are terminated by abortion.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\"><sup><sup>[1]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li>In 2008, 1.21 million abortions were performed in US.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Teen pregnancy accounts for only 2 in 10 of all abortions<br \/>\nperformed in theUS.<\/li>\n<li>Women in their twenties account for more than half of all<br \/>\nabortions performed in the US.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn2\"><sup><sup>[2]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li>88% of abortions occur in the 1<sup>st<\/sup> 12 weeks. Only<br \/>\n1.5% occur later in the term.<\/li>\n<li>6 in 10 women having abortions already have one or more<br \/>\nchildren.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These women often cite<br \/>\nthe need to care for their children as a primary reason for choosing to<br \/>\nhave\u00a0\u00a0 an abortion.<\/li>\n<li>66%<br \/>\nof women having abortions intend to have children in the future.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3 in 4 women who have abortions describe themselves as<br \/>\nreligiously affiliated.<\/li>\n<li>Catholic women have an abortion rate 29% higher<br \/>\nthan Protestant women.<\/li>\n<li>One in five women having an abortion is a<br \/>\nborn-again or Evangelical Christian.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn3\">[3]<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2008, more than 4 in 10 abortion patients had incomes<br \/>\nbelow the federal poverty line.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn4\"><sup><sup>[4]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Women of color have much higher rates of unintended<br \/>\npregnancies and are disproportionately more likely to have an abortion, which<br \/>\npoints to widespread inequities in access to contraception and adequate health<br \/>\ncare.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>54% of women who have abortions used a contraceptive method<br \/>\n(usually the condom or the pill) during the month they became pregnant. Among<br \/>\nthose women, 76% of pill users and 49% of condom users report having used their<br \/>\nmethod inconsistently, while 13% of pill users and 14% of condom users report<br \/>\ncorrect use.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn5\"><sup><sup>[5]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abortion and Providers<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 2008, 87% of U.S. counties had no abortion provider.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn6\"><sup><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>1\/3 of American women live in a county with no abortion<br \/>\nprovider, which meant they would have to travel outside their county to obtain<br \/>\nan abortion. Of women obtaining abortions in 2006, nonhospital providers<br \/>\nestimate that 27% traveled at least 50 miles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Abortion is Safe<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The risk of abortion complications is minimal: Fewer than<br \/>\n0.3% of abortion patients experience a complication that requires<br \/>\nhospitalization.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn7\"><sup><sup>[7]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Abortion is safer when and where it is legal.\n<ul>\n<li>Opponents have attempted to claim that abortion causes a<br \/>\nnumber of complications.\u00a0 There is no<br \/>\nevidence for these claims, and research has systematically discredited each of<br \/>\nthem:<\/li>\n<li>In repeated studies since the early 1980s, leading experts<br \/>\nhave concluded that abortion does not pose a hazard to women\u2019s mental health.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn8\"><sup><sup>[8]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<li>Abortion does not increase one\u2019s risk of breast cancer as<br \/>\nshown by several peer-reviewed and respected scientific studies.<\/li>\n<li>Abortions performed in the first trimester pose virtually no<br \/>\nlong-term risk of such problems as infertility, ectopic pregnancy, spontaneous<br \/>\nabortion (miscarriage) or birth defect, and little or no risk of preterm or low-birth-weight<br \/>\ndeliveries.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn9\"><sup><sup>[9]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Current<br \/>\nThreats to Abortion Access<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Threats to legal abortion<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1992, the Supreme Court in <em>Planned Parenthood v. Casey<\/em><br \/>\nsignificantly weakened the legal protections previously afforded women and<br \/>\nphysicians by giving states the right to enact restrictions that do not create<br \/>\nan \u201cundue burden\u201d for women seeking abortion<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn10\"><sup><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Since<br \/>\n1976 via the Hyde Amendment (which has been renewed every year), Congress has<br \/>\nbarred the use of federal Medicaid funds to pay for abortions, except when the<br \/>\nwoman\u2019s life would be endangered by a full-term pregnancy or in cases of rape<br \/>\nor incest. <a title=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/zCmCcACrm6M\" href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/zCmCcACrm6M\">http:\/\/youtu.be\/zCmCcACrm6M<\/a><\/li>\n<li>On May 4, 2011, HR3 passed in the U.S. House of Representatives by a<br \/>\nvote of 251 to 175 . (No action in \u00a0the<br \/>\nSenate.)<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Expands and makes permanent (as opposed to<br \/>\nannual opportunity to strike it) that no federal funds can be spent on abortion<\/li>\n<li>Uses personal and business tax policy to bar<br \/>\nany insurance policy (including those paid with personal funds) from covering<br \/>\nabortion, even to protect a woman\u2019s health when threatened by complication with<br \/>\nlater term wanted pregnancies which could result in all private insurance<br \/>\ndropping coverage of abortion. Currently 85% of private insurance plans cover<br \/>\nabortion.<\/li>\n<li>Redefines rape as only \u201cforcible rape,\u201d<br \/>\nmeaning those that are inebriated or drugged do not count as rapes. Women would<br \/>\nhave to prove that the rape was forced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>36 state<br \/>\ngovernments enacted 92 anti-choice regulations related to abortions in 2011, a<br \/>\nnew record.\u00a0 The previous record was in<br \/>\n2005, when about 34 regulations were enacted.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These measures:<\/p>\n<p>Discourage and delay pregnant women from acting on decisions to obtain<br \/>\nan abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Interfere with clinician practices in the name of safety.<\/p>\n<p>Restrict the gestational period for when a fetus can be aborted.<\/p>\n<p>Limit government funds to for abortion care and thus limits the choices<br \/>\nof poor women.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Criminalize<br \/>\nwomen\u2019s decisions.\u00a0 <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Restrictive<br \/>\nproposals<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Eliminating<br \/>\ninsurance coverage of abortion. Currently 85% of private insurance covers<br \/>\nabortion. Laws passed by the House of Representatives and state governments are<br \/>\nin effect banning private coverage of abortion<\/li>\n<li>\u201cConsicence<br \/>\nClauses\u201d that allow women to die. 10\/2011 the House of Representatives passed<br \/>\nthe \u201cProtect<br \/>\nLife Act\u201d, known by women\u2019s health advocates as the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/health\/2011\/10\/12\/341070\/house-gop-proposes-so-called-let-women-die-bill-that-lets-hospitals-deny-life-saving-care\/\">Let<br \/>\nWomen Die<\/a>\u201d bill. It allows hospitals that receive federal funds to <a href=\"http:\/\/http:\/thinkprogress.org\/politics\/2011\/10\/14\/344019\/house-passes-the-let-women-die-bill\/\">reject<br \/>\nany woman<\/a> in need of an abortion procedure, even if it is necessary to save<br \/>\nher life.<\/li>\n<li>Requiring Ultrasounds before abortion. Some states require<br \/>\nthat women receive information about how to access an ultrasound while others<br \/>\nrequire that a woman undergo an ultrasound prior to obtaining an abortion. An<br \/>\nultrasound is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not medically necessary<\/span> for first-trimester abortion and<br \/>\nthese types of laws appear to be attempts to personify the fetus and dissuade<br \/>\nthe woman from choosing an abortion, as well as significantly add to the cost<br \/>\nof the procedure<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn11\"><sup><sup>[11]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cInformed consent\u201d a.k.a. misinformation\/scare tactic<br \/>\nrequirements are often used to interfere with a woman\u2019s easy access to a safe<br \/>\nabortion. Many states require mandatory biased counseling and often at least a<br \/>\n24-hour \u201cwaiting period\u201d between counseling and an abortion procedure. Many<br \/>\nstates require certain information to be given during counseling such as<br \/>\ninformation about fetal development, how to obtain an ultrasound, along with<br \/>\nmisleading or inaccurate information about the risks associated with abortion.<br \/>\nThis requirement, designed to deter women from seeking an abortion, causes an<br \/>\nundue emotional and financial burden. In states that require a waiting period,<br \/>\nwomen must make two trips to a health care provider in order to obtain an<br \/>\nabortion, increasing the difficulty of accessing an abortion for low-income or<br \/>\nworking women<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn12\"><sup><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a> who have to find child<br \/>\ncare, transportation and coverage at their jobs to travel large distances to a<br \/>\nprovider twice.<\/li>\n<li>Many clinics and health care facilities are targets of<br \/>\nserious antiabortion violence including bombings, arson, and vandalism.<br \/>\nAdditionally, these facilities are often subject to violent protests and<br \/>\nblockades. The federal government in 1994 enacted the Freedom of Access to<br \/>\nClinic Entrances (FACE) Act which prohibits intentional property damage, or the<br \/>\nuse of force or threat of force to injure, intimidate, or interfere with<br \/>\nsomeone entering a health care facility<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn13\"><sup><sup>[13]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Crisis pregnancy centers present themselves as \u201cpregnancy<br \/>\nclinics\u201d or \u201cmedical clinicis\u201d to persuade women to not have an abortion.<br \/>\nRather than present all the options (continue, continue and put up for<br \/>\nadoption, or terminate) they present biased facts. Many receive taxpayers<br \/>\nfunds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"584\" height=\"329\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FJXRVA16Kig?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>State initiatives to make the embryo a person. Colorado started this trend. Mississippi followed suit this year, in an<br \/>\ninitiative that was defeated by voters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some good<br \/>\nreferences:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/health\/2011\/12\/27\/395239\/the-gops-10-most-extreme-attacks-on-a-womans-right-to-choose-an-abortion\/\">http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/health\/2011\/12\/27\/395239\/the-gops-10-most-extreme-attacks-on-a-womans-right-to-choose-an-abortion\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/jezebel.com\/5871360\/the-year-in-your-uterus#<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>California<\/strong><strong> Specific<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In California, 897,700 of the 7,680,396 women of<br \/>\nreproductive age became pregnant in 2008. 61% of these pregnancies resulted in<br \/>\nlive births and 24% in induced abortions.<\/li>\n<li>In 2008, 214,190 women obtained abortions in California, producing a rate of 27.6 abortions<br \/>\nper 1,000 women of reproductive age. Some of these women were from other states,<br \/>\nand some California residents had abortions in other states, so this rate may<br \/>\nnot reflect the abortion rate of state residents. The rate increased 2% since<br \/>\n2005, when it was 27.1 abortions per 1,000 women 15-44. Abortions in California represent 17.7% of all abortions in<br \/>\ntheUnited States.<\/li>\n<li>In 2008, 22% of California counties had no abortion provider.<a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn14\"><sup><sup>[14]<\/sup><\/sup><\/a>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Catholics support birth control and have abortions.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sensus_fidelium\" target=\"_blank\"> Sensus fidelium <\/a>\u2014the graced and experience-fed wisdom of the faithful that has always been one of the sources of truth in the Catholic tradition.\u201d<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/04\/14\/us-most-catholic-women-us-use-birth-cont-idUSTRE73D4SZ20110414\" target=\"_blank\">98% of sexually active Catholic women have used a <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/2011\/04\/14\/us-most-catholic-women-us-use-birth-cont-idUSTRE73D4SZ20110414\" target=\"_blank\">form of contraception<\/a> banned by the Catholic Church.<\/li>\n<li>As recently as <a href=\"http:\/\/viewer.zmags.com\/publication\/4fa389e8#\/4fa389e8\/1\">1968, a majority of the Pope&#8217;s advisors agreed<\/a> that there was no pastroal reaso to ban Catholics from using contraception.\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pontifical_Commission_on_Birth_Control\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0 <a
